The Science Behind PDO Threads: How They Lift Sagging Skin and Stimulate Collagen Production

The Science Behind PDO Threads: How They Revitalize Your Skin

Hi there! I'm Nyree Van Maarseveen, a Nurse Practitioner and Certified Nurse Midwife, and the owner of Beauty Energy Exchange Aesthetics and Wellness in Point Loma, San Diego. I'm excited to share with you the incredible benefits of PDO threads, a product I use myself and offer to my clients!

What's the Secret to Youthful Skin? Collagen!

Have you ever wondered why your skin starts to sag and wrinkle as you get older? It's all about collagen. This amazing protein is like the scaffolding and padding of your skin, keeping it firm and bouncy. Unfortunately, as we age, our body produces less and less collagen, leading to those pesky signs of aging.

PDO Threads: Your Skin's New Best Friend

This is where PDO threads come in! They're tiny, dissolvable threads that can be used to revitalize your skin. Think of them as little helpers that jumpstart your skin's natural collagen production.

How Do PDO Threads Work Their Magic?

When I insert PDO threads into your skin, they act like a gentle nudge to your body, saying, "Hey, we need more collagen here!"

Your body responds by creating new collagen to surround the threads. This process, called neocollagenesis, results in firmer, plumper, and more youthful-looking skin.

MINT PDO threads San Diego

Different Threads for Different Needs

PDO threads are like tools in my aesthetic toolbox. Each type addresses specific concerns to help you achieve your desired look. There are smooth threads that smooth and tighten the skin to minimize fine lines and wrinkles, and, lifting or barbed threads that lift the skin and combat facial sagging.

I'm proud to offer MINT™ PDO threads, MINT™ stands for Minimally Invasive Nonsurgical Thread. MINT™ is backed by more than 6 years of published studies for its safety and is the first PDO suture in the US market to have received three FDA clearances.

With MINT™, I can tailor a treatment plan to your unique needs. Their diverse product line includes lifting or barb threads, and smooth threads in various styles and sizes. MINT™ PDO barb threads are designed with patented technology, featuring 360-degree press-molded barbs that deliver superior results compared to traditional cut-barb threads that other brands use.

Whether you're looking for a subtle refresh or a more dramatic transformation, MINT™ threads can help you achieve your goals.

The PDO Threadlift Experience

In total, your procedure will take about one hour. To begin, I will mark your skin in the places where the threads will be inserted. I will apply a local anesthetic to ensure you’re comfortable during your treatment. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, I will carefully insert the PDO threads using a cannula (a blunt-tipped needle). The cannula is loaded with a PDO thread, and is placed into the subcutaneous layer of the skin. The cannula is then withdrawn, leaving the PDO thread in position under the skin, where it keeps the tissues lifted upward and the skin tightened and boosts collagen production. This process is repeated, however many threads are required to achieve your aesthetic goals. Each thread acts as an anchor lifting the skin and tissues upward.  The PDO threads achieve an immediate result, you will see an instant lift and more defined features.

The PDO Smooth Thread Experience

I will assess your areas of concern to determine how many threads are needed to achieve your desired result. The treatment then consists of cleaning the treatment area and inserting absorbable MINT PDO monothreads with a very fine needle into the treatment areas. It is a quick procedure as inserting smooth threads takes on average about 6-8 seconds per thread.

It feels like a little pinch when the smooth threads are inserted and placed in the treatment area, but there should be no other sensations once treatment is completed.

There is risk of occasional bruising, but that can often be avoided by following our pre-treatment instructions. Results are not immediate as it takes time for the suture to dissolve and your body's healing mechanism to work. You usually start to see results after 4 weeks, with optimal results after a full treatment cycle at around 3 – 4 months.

PDO Threads vs. Other Treatments

I love PDO lifting threads because they actually lift sagging skin (unlike fillers), and for those apprehensive about fillers or biostimulators (like Sculptra and Radiesse), smooth threads offer a more holistic approach to collagen stimulation and skin rejuvenation.

For those who already use neurotoxins (like Botox), and fillers and other aesthetic treatments, PDO threads are another tool to add to their anti-aging toolkit, so you can take advantage of all the best things each treatment has to offer for synergistic effects. Now you can target wrinkles with neuromodulators, restore volume with dermal fillers and biostimulators, address skin texture with microneedling and chemical peels, and take care of sagging skin with MINT™.

Are PDO Threads Right for You?

PDO threads are fantastic for people who want to lift and firm their features and address mild to moderate sagging skin in the face and jawline without having a surgical procedure.  It is a great treatment for nasolabial folds and marionette lines and jowls. If you're looking for a natural-looking lift and want to improve your skin's texture, they might be perfect for you.

Maintaining Your PDO Thread Results

To get the most out of your PDO thread treatment, it's important to take good care of your skin. Protecting it from the sun, staying hydrated, and using high-quality skincare products will help prolong your results.

The Future of PDO Threads

The world of aesthetics is constantly evolving, and I'm excited to see the advancements in PDO thread technology. I believe they will continue to be a popular choice for people seeking a natural and effective way to look and feel their best.

FAQs

How long do PDO threadlift results last?

The threads dissolve in 6-8 months after insertion, but the results can last for up to one year as the threads can help stimulate collagen production in the skin. However, results will vary depending on the degree of sagging, thickness of the skin, and the facial structure of the patient.

What areas of the face can be treated with PDO smooth threads?

Smooth threads can be used in any areas where you are looking for tightening or smoothing tired skin or skin with a crepey texture, including around the eye area (crow’s feet), the upper lip, the hollows of the cheeks, under the chin or around the mouth, even the brow area.

Are there any activities I should avoid after a PDO thread procedure? It's depends on the type of procedure, for smooth threads there is minimal downtime, for lifting threads it’s best to avoid strenuous exercise for 2-3 weeks after the procedure.

How soon will I see results from a PDO thread lift? You'll notice an immediate lifting effect, but the full results from collagen production will take a few weeks to develop.
